Completing the Loop: New Trail Construction Coming to Darien Lake State Park!
Get ready for a new adventure at Darien Lake State Park! The Western New York Mountain Bicycling Association (WNYMBA), in partnership with Darien Lakes State Park, is stoked to announce the upcoming construction of a new multi-use trail! For now, we’re calling it Singletrack Trail 1 (ST 1), but stay tuned for its official, super-cool name.
A Look Back:
For those new to the trails at Darien Lake State Park, here’s a little history. The vision for these trails began in 2011 with an initial push by Jonathan Moscato. Eugene Melnyk stepped up to champion the project, and the original trail proposal, based on scouting and GIS analyses by Jon Sundquist, was submitted in 2012. After years of planning, discussions with the park, and environmental review, construction on the first trails started in 2017.
While the original proposal included Singletrack Trails 1, 2, and 3, the project evolved.
- Singletrack Trail 3 became Shotgun Ridge.
- The western portion of Singletrack Trail 2 is now known as Beaver Town, with Oz branching off from it.
- Singletrack Trail 1, the trail we’re now preparing to build, was never completed—until now!
About Singletrack Trail 1:
Singletrack Trail 1 will be approximately 1.5 miles long and will wind through mostly mature deciduous woods and planted rows of conifers. The trail is designed to be beginner-friendly, making it accessible to a wide range of users. While Singletrack Trail 1 may not have particularly unique features, its primary importance is connecting the existing trails to create a more seamless and enjoyable loop experience. It will also be getting its own official name in the future.
Benefits of the New Loop:
Completing the loop with ST 1 offers numerous benefits:
- Improved Flow: No more out-and-backs! The loop will create a more dynamic and engaging experience for mountain bikers, hikers, and other trail users.
- Increased Trail Access: This new trail expands access to the trail network at Darien Lake State Park, allowing users to explore more of the area.
- Enhanced Recreation: The completed loop will add to the overall recreational value of Darien Lake State Park, offering visitors even more opportunities to connect with nature.
The completed loop, thanks to the addition of Singletrack Trail 1, has transformed the trail experience at Darien Lake State Park. This improvement provides greater flow and accessibility for hikers, bikers, and all who enjoy the park’s trails. WNYMBA is pleased to have played a role in making this vision a reality.
