The Snowmobile trail that DEC built several years ago has proven too steep and with too shart switchbacks for the gromming machines, and so DEC is building a new trail from the Eagle Lot up to East McCarty Hill Road. The route is shown on the map to the left. It will cross Rain Trail at the top, in a similar fashion as when the then-new trail crossed Rain over near where it turns into Sidewinder. Construction on that portion of the trail has already started. The lower part will start near where the Eagle Singletrack starts. We have been in significant communication with DEC about this intersection and plan to meet with them this coming Friday to discuss the route so that is doesn't harsh the flow.
We of course support multi-use of the state forests and thus support this effort as well. Of course, snowmobile trails are much wider than singletrack, so many trees are being removed for its construction, but this is consistent with the role of state forests as a supply of timber. This trail will be finished sometime this summer. East McCarty Hill Road may be closed temporarily for a while while the pull out the timber.
