There's a Meeting! - Wednesday 8/19/15

It’s been a while since our last meeting, so Instead of just “BS-ing” with your friends at the trailhead, it’s time once again to get together and swap lies over a pitcher and a pizza. There’s been plenty of opportunities for riding since it dried up over the past few weeks, but there’s also been lots going on off the bike and behind the scenes. Join us at the Colden Country Inn at 8:00 PM on Wednesday August 19th and we’ll bring you up to speed on all the latest gossip and news. This meeting will be a quick one. It’s summer and summertime is all about riding. Get in a few miles at Sprague Brook Park (right up the road from the Inn) before the meeting and then stop by afterwards.

International Bowhunters at Holiday Valley

International Bowhunters at Holiday Valley

The International Bowhunters Organization World Championship is back at Holiday Valley!   Our friends at Holiday Valley have asked us to advise that ALL Hiking and Biking Trails on HV property will be CLOSED from Monday August 3rd through Sunday August 9th.   During these Dates the International Bowhunting Organization will be using Holiday Valley lands for the IBO World Championship 3-D Target Shoot.  We probably don’t need to say that the mix of flying arrows and mountain bike riding has very little to recommend it, but we’ll do it anyway. Please extend these World Championship competitors and the staff at Holiday Valley the courtesy they deserve by altering your rides to exclude the Holiday Valley property.

Don't get lost at Sprague!

Don't get lost at Sprague!

Don't lost at Sprague!  Apparently a couple of cyclists did last night.  Please remember to buy one of the WNYMBA maps.  But failing that, everyone should download onto their phone the MTBProject App.  It has all out trails on there, and uses your phone's GPS to tell you where you are on the trail.  It even works with poor/no cell service because it caches the maps. We will remind Erie County again that if they ever get reports of lost bikers to call us, since I am sure we could find them a lot faster than anybody else!

Give those Wet Trails a Rest!!

After a great early spring, summer is now throwing us a curveball with all this rain.  It really sucks.  As you can see, the two most recent trail condition updates (Hunters and E-ville) report way-too-muddy conditions.  I haven't been out (well, beacuse it's been too wet), but I am sure Sprague Brook is in just as bad shape.  Yet, while I was out road riding yesterday on 240 (yes, in the rain), I saw two cars come by heading north with bikes on the racks.  Hopefully these were some folks that went a mile and realized the trails just weren't ready. We have just found out that Erie County Parks will be updating their master plan next year.  The last time this was done about 10 years ago a lot of people pushed to get bikes kicked out of the parks.  We pushed back and kept access, and more importantly, got the county to agree to letting us build new singletrack at Sprague.  We just as easily lose that access to Sprague this go around if the trails a...

Board Meeting - Thursday June 18th

Late notice for sure, but your WNYMBA Executive and Advisory Board will be hard at work at the Craft Tap House in E. Aurora http://www.crafttaphouse.com/on Thursday night, June 18th at 7:00 PM. All members and interested parties are welcome to attend, but be pre-warned … it’ll be boring. This one will not be a social meeting. Board members will be discussing exciting stuff like grant applications for trail building and will be assigning specific jobs to expedite a specific grant application.

Our insurance company has "strongly suggested" that we tell you that Mountain Biking can be dangerous. If you're visiting this site it's very likely that you're already aware that if you insist on having a good time by riding your mountain bike, eventually you will almost certainly fall down and collect any number of boo-boos, dings and injuries, serious or otherwise, but we have to tell you anyway.

Mountain Biking is a potentially hazardous activity carrying a significant risk of bodily injury and even death. Mountain biking should only be undertaken if you have a complete awareness of these risks. You can reduce the level of risk by wearing a helmet and by riding within your own skill level.
