Big plans for National Trails Day (NTD) this year! We will be holding our annual event celebrating NTD on May 27. We'll start with a trail day at Hunters Creek where our HC trail master Ben Clauss has a great day of trail work planned that may even include some new trail to be constructed. Immediately following trail work we'll move to 42 North Brewery for a party to celebrate NTD, WNYMBA’s 25th anniversary and the 2017 launch of a great WNY MTB beer Creekside by 42N. This session IPA truly embodies the spirit of the trails, streams, and rivers of the 42 parallel. We'll have food, music, prizes, and fun to celebrate! 42N has generously agreed to donate $1 of every pint sold that day to the WNYMBA trail fund! So if you can't make the trail day, stop by the party anyway and celebrate with us. SO just to recap: National Trails Day Celebration May 27 2017 10:00a Trail workday at Hunter's Creek Park Centerline Rd lot ...
The 2017 Swap and Sale held on 2-Apr at the GOBNMC DIG Innovation Center was a great success for WNYMBA and the larger WNY biking community. Nearly 50 bikes were given a new lease on life. Along with a small truck load of wheels, pedals, handlebars, racks, and almost every other part you could name. There was great food, great fun, and a wonderful sense of community. Many thanks to all who supported the club through sales, donations, and solidarity. We’ll have the financials for the next meeting, but early count puts us ahead of last year’s total. This all would not be possible without the help of supporters and member volunteers so thanks to all listed below, apologies to anyone I may have missed GoBike and GOBNMC for presenting the event and supporting WNYMBA and the larger WNY biking community. Special thanks to Thea Hassan and Nate Hill! Our sponsoring local bike shops; Campus Wheel Works, Northstar Bikes, Ricks Cycle, and Tom’s...
As we put it on our maps, we have said a general rule of thumb of when to hit the trails is "Tax Time" (April 15), sometimes earlier, sometimes later. As I type this, I hear the rain come down outside again. Unfortunately, this year sounds like it may be a "sometimes later" year. Right now, the Erie Co. parks aren't ready to go, and there are reports of very wet conditions in E-ville. Next week's forecast is looking better, but we will have to see. In the meantime, please report conditions at our "Trails Dry?" reporting page. Yes, right now, there are no recent posts and no posts from last year. But that is because out website got hacked last May and the latest backup was from February or March. So all the 2016 reports were lost. And after May, it was so dry, there was no need to report. It's super important to let the trails dry in the spring before heading out. Because of the way the soils are, way more damage can occur when ridde...
And what a great trail work season we have coming up. Highlights include (1) Starting trail building at Darien Lakes State Park! (2) Another trail building weekend at Allegany State Park with free cabin lodging (3) more maintenance work at Erie County forests and Cattaraugus State forests. Check out the summary at the Trail Work Page, or over at Meetup. Hope to see you all out on the trails.
Board meetings are where lots of boring stuff happens. We try to work out boring details about running the club, in order to present to the general membership during our regular meetings. They aren't a lot of fun, but since WNYMBA isn't a secret organization, any members can come to if they are looking for a snoozefest. Our next one is going to be Monday February 20 to talk about insurance, IMBA Chapter 2.0 program, plans for the beer release party, spring trail work schedule, and the season open meeting at Tom's. Plus anything else of import. This one will be at Hamburg Brewring @ 7:00 on Nov. 15 (Monday) (WNYMBA isn't buying, just in case you wondered). If you like the nuts and bolts of running a nonprofit, see you there!
WNYMBA met with Erie County last week to discuss Fat Biking in Erie County Parks. As most of you are aware, anywhere we can bike in the summer time we can bike in the winter with fat bikes, with the one local exception being we were told last year that we were to stay off the XC ski loop at Sprague (also, down in Allegany, the XC trails there are groomed for classic technique skiing and open only to skiers). We met to present the research on the effects of fat bikes (3.7" minimum tire size, 10 psi maximum pressure) on groomed trails - in other words that there is no impact. Unlike regular mountain bikes, fat bikes do not sink into packed trails. Of course, fat bikes (like hiking or showshoeing) can destroy set tracks (i.e. the two parallel grooves) and need to stay off of them. The county was amenable to our suggestion. Because the XC trails at Sprague can get extremely crowded when there is snow (which seems to be a rare occurence again this year), we dis...
